Champagne Brugnon

Winemaking: the ancient art

Alain Brugnon is the winemaker. His father Marc started passing down wine technique practically when he was born and at 17, he was expected to participate in harvest winemaking.

Six months after the harvest, father, sons and wives get together and taste the primer wines and then decide on proper blend for that year.

They practice what they call la lutte raisonnée, which means that they have the soil and vineyards analyzed and then decide upon the treatments necessary to avoid disease.

They try to avoid chemical solutions and are currently exploiting a method called "sexual confusion": they use hormones to confuse worms in reproduction, avoiding disease and the need to use insecticides.

They favor ecological means of producing healthy grapes.

Another of their battles is to insure that they age each bottle for a minimum three years and longer for vintage.

Youthful wines have the advantage of retaining fruity aromas, but a champagne that has not been aged long enough can be difficult to drink because of the acid level.

Being family owned, family run and producing only champagne from their grapes gives the Brugnon family control over the final product.

They never stop exploring new techniques to improve their wines, all the while remaining loyal to their forefathers who already were rich with experience and knowledge.
